The Dukha people in north Mongolia have the magical reality of living each day with reindeers at their side. As well as riding them and using them to produce milk and cheese, they also breed these Christmas themed creatures.
With only 200-400 or so people as part of this nomadic group, and reindeer numbers dwindling, it’s possible that this enchanted existence won’t last too much longer. The group make their money almost exclusively from tourists, who come to see their unique lifestyle and buy their crafted items as mementos of their trip.
Photographed by Harvard scholar Hamid Sardar-Afkhani, these snapshots provide unparalleled insight into this unique and captivating culture.
A reindeer is for life, not just for Christmas, don’t ya know!
